You're invited...

You are invited to join an exciting
opportunity to explore parts of northern Africa
with our Archbishop, Jeffrey Driver, and other
young people from Adelaide.
We initially planned the Pilgrimage for mid 2008
but found that this time was not suitable for most
potential pilgrims - so the time has been
changed. We will now travel for 4 weeks from
mid January to mid February 2009 (specific
dates will be confirmed soon).

Why?

This pilgrimage is an opportunity to ‘broaden
your horizons’ and to experience the presence of
God and the activity of the church in an exciting
and vibrant part of the world.

Where?

We will travel to Ethiopia and Egypt. Taking
into account security concerns in the area we will
also travel to either Sudan, Kenya or another
nearby country.

What will we be doing?

In Ethiopia we will connect with CMS work with
street kids and Fistula hospital (established by
Australians in 1974). We will also experience
one of the oldest expressions of Christianity in
the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

In Cairo, Egypt, we will explore and share the
work with Sudanese Refugees through All Saints
Cathedral, experience the ancient Coptic Church
and the older civilisation of the Pharaohs through
the Pyramids of Giza and the treasures of
Tutankhamen.

Entering the Sinai desert we will travel to St
Catherine’s monastery, established in the 6th
Century, experiencing the desert which shaped
the lives of many Biblical characters. A highlight
will be to climb Mt Sinai during the night to
experience dawn from the summit.

In Alexandria we will explore this ancient centre
of learning, the home of one of the wonders of
the Ancient World and share the work of ABM
in the heart of this thriving city.

In Sudan, under the protection of the government
of Southern Sudan, we will experience a church
which is rebuilding after many years of war. Yet
the church in Sudan never lost hope and grew
stronger through their adversity. We will share
the vibrancy of their worship and the passion of
their hope for their future and ours.

Who?

Pilgrims will be those completing year 12 in
2008 (or equivalent age) up to 25 years old.
Places are limited to 19 pilgrims and 5 leaders.
(8 of these places have already been filled.)
How much will it cost?

The estimated total cost is $5500 per person.
This will be reduced by shared fundraising (some
events are already in the planning!). You may
also find your own fundraising ideas. Pilgrims
are also encouraged to speak with their home
parishes to seek support. In 2006 all of the
pilgrims to Rwanda were substantially supported
by their parishes.
Extra financial support may also be available on
application to the leaders.

What do I do now?

If you are interested, please register your interest with
the leaders of the African Pilgrimage, Jess
Harris and Paul Mitchell who can be contacted
by phone or email (see below).

Application forms will need to be lodged by
Easter (March 23) and deposits paid soon after to
secure a place on the Pilgrimage.

Pass on the invitation to others.
Come and explore an opportunity which will
change your life.
